One of the most powerful films to come out of India in 2015 is set to hit UK TV Screens.
‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’ stars acclaimed actors Nawazzuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte and tells the story of Dashrath Manjhi, the poor labourer from rural Bihar who spent more than two decades carving a road through a mountain using nothing more than a hammer and chisel after his beloved wife Phalguni is mortally wounded after a fall.
Manjhi is forced to take a circuitous and critically long route to the local hospital resulting in Phalguni’s death.
The charismatic Siddiqui gives an outstanding performance as Manjhi who comes the power of nature as well as corrupt local politicians through the 1950’s and 1960’s to carve the road and shorten the route to the hospital.
Above all, it becomes an extraordinarily powerful act of healing for the heartbroken Manjhi.
His story came to worldwide attention in 2013 when he was featured in the TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ – hosted by Aamir Khan – which showcased the struggle for survival in many parts of rural India.
The film received widespread acclaim in India and at film festivals around the world but never got a UK release.
Audiences here can now catch the film at 1pm on Saturday 30 January on Colors TV (Sky Channel 821, FreeSat Channel 662 and Virgin Channel 826).
