Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been honoured by France in recognition of her contribution to the arts.
Francois Richier, the French Ambassador to India presented the Chevalier dans l’Order des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters), at a ceremony in Mumbai Friday (Nov 02), a day after Aishwarya’s 39th Birthday.
Speaking after the ceremony, the former Miss World said she was “overwhelmed” by the honour and thanked everyone who had helped her to “have such a glorious career”.
Aishwarya’s family, including husband Abhishek, in-laws Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya were present at the ceremony.
The actress’ father-in-law Amitabh was conferred with France’s highest civilian honour, the Legion d’Honneur, in 2007.
Previous Indian recipients of the Chevalier dans l’Order de Arts et des Lettres include actor Shah Rukh Khhan, Carnatic composer and actor M. Balamuralis9kna, Malayali literary pioneer M. Mukundan.
Other notable Knights of the Order include Bob Dylan, George Clooney and singer Shakira.
