Amazon withdraws “unacceptable” Indian flag doormats after outrage.

Internet shopping giant Amazon has withdrawn from sale a doormat designed with the Indian tri-colour on it, after India’s foreign minister threatened to deny visas to the company’s officials.

The doormat was listed for sale on Amazon Canada and caused widespread outrage in India and among Indian Diaspora communities around the world.

A spokesman confirmed to the Washington Post this morning that the item had been withdrawn from its site.

On Wednesday, India’s Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj demanded an unconditional apology and a withdrawal of all products “insulting the tri-colour” and threatened to cancel existing visas for Amazon officials and deny any future visa requests.

The doormats were touted by two online retailers – Mayers Flag Doormats and XLYL.
