The United Nations is to declare June 21 ‘World Yoga Day’, meeting one of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal ambitions.
Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj made the announcement on Sunday.
“Three months ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the world community that India’s yoga should be celebrated as World Yoga Day.
“I am happy to inform you that we have received support of 170 nations and four days from today, the United Nations will declare June 21 as the World Yoga Day,” Swaraj said at a function attended by yoga guru Ramdev.
Mr Modi had made his appeal during a speech to the United Nations in September where he urged the world community to help elevate Indian yoga to international status.
The Prime Minister has been a passionate practitioner and promoter of yoga and went so far as to create a separate government ministry which is charged with promoting the practice in public life.
