Anoushka Shankar joins ‘One Billion Rising’ movement

This is the global campaign that is taking everyone by storm: One Billion Rising. Culminating on Valentine’s Day 2013, this movement is aimed at ending violence against women. With UN statistics that say one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime; that makes leaves billion women worldwide facing the possibility of violence.

This Valentines Day is an invitation to one billion women and the men who love them to take to the streets on Feb 14th and demand an end to the violence.

Thousands of people from 200 countries around the world are participating. The numbers are growing.

Growing up a young Indian woman in America, Grammy winner Anoushka Shankar talks about her reason behind supporting this movement. As a young student in highschool, Shankar ran a feminism club in school, never realising how deep the issue would run in the not-so-distant future. “What’s cute about what’s going on in the world today?” she asks in a video supporting the movement.

Anoushka who is herself a victim of abuse spoke candidly about it, saying, “I suffered sexual and emotional abuse, at the hands of a man my parents trusted implicitly…I didnt know I could change it”.

“Enough is enough, I am rising for Jyoti and for women like her. I am rising with the amazing women of my country who are saying enough is enough”.
