‘Barfi!’ is India’s official entry to Oscars 2013

Director Anurag Basu’s universally acclaimed ‘Barfi’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the 2013 Oscars.

The period comedy-drama starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra has been a critical and commercial success around the world and staved off 19 other films to the honour.

Set in idyllic Darjeeling in the 1970’s, the film revolves around the carefree, deaf-and-mute Barfi and his quest for true love.

The film, made by Disney UTV on a budget of Rs 30 crores (£344,000) amassed nearly Rs 60 crores during its first week of release whilst winning over critics around the world.

The UKAsian described the film as being “resplendent with beautifully conceived moments of sheer, cinematic delights”.

Zee News said the film was “an out and out entertainer” whilst www.dnaindia.com said: “Barfi leaves you teary-eyed yet happy”.

Ranbir Kapoor’s performance in the title role has come into particular praise, with the Times of India saying: “Without use of conventional crutches of cool catchphrases, dhamaakedar-dialogbaazi, bare bodies and other items, (Ranbir) stuns you in every single frame!”

Managing Director of Disney UTV, Siddharth Roy Kapoor said in a statement: “Barfi is very close to the hearts of all of us at UTV and it is gives us great satisfaction that a film we have developed and nurtured since its inception has been met with so much love from audiences and critics world wide.”

He said an added source of pride is that this is the fourth UTV film in last seven years to have been selected to represent India at the Academy awards.

The earlier selections were Rang De Basanti (2006), Harischandrachi Factory (2009) and Peepli Live (2010),” said Kapoor.
