Indian cinema has long looked to the West for inspiration and now it appears that Indian TV is getting in on the act.
Star Plus is to do a ‘Desi’ version of one of America’s most popular and loved sitcoms, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’.
DNA quotes a Star Plus insider as saying that acclaimed TV and film actor Ronit Roy and fellow actor and former Bigg Boss winner Vindu Dara Singh will be cast as the two goofy and eternally-harassed brothers, played by Ray Romano and Brad Garrett in the US original.
The insider told DNA that Roy will “most likely” play the title character of sports writer Raymond Ray Barone whilst Vindhu will take on the role of Ray’s older brother Robert, a grey matter-challenged police officer.
Whilst the original sitcom remains wildly popular on syndication around the world – including in India – Star Plus intends creating a “whole new fan base among the non-metropolitan viewership” for the show.
First screened in 1996, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ ran for more than 200 episodes through 2005 and made Romano one of the highest-paid actors on TV – reportedly earning nearly $2 million per episode during the final season.
The show revolves around the challenges that the easy-going Raymond faces living with his overbearing wife Debra and his snoopy and meddlesome mother, Marie – fabulously played by Doris Roberts.
