A large part of the magic of Bollywood through the course of its 99-year history has been its’ effervescent music; at times melancholic, often uplifting, never less than profoundly evocative.
Few however, have captured that redolence than Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood and Noor Jehan; widely considered the finest playback singers in the history of Bollywood, with the ability to pitch perfectly capture its drama and romance.
Now, on the eve of 100 years of Bollywood cinema, Saregama Events UK is offering fans of these singular performers the opportunity to enjoy their most superlative moments, as re-imagined by two contemporary playback singers who have forged an exceptional reputation of their own.
‘Celebrating the Legends’ will see Roop Kumar Rathod and Sunali Rathod bring to life these iconic singers and their classic hits during a series of concerts in London, Birmingham and Leicester this September.
The husband and wife duo will perform a series of timeless classics drawn from the beguiling playlists of Rafi, Mangeshkar, Mahmood and Jehan, including the likes of Rafi’s ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ and ‘O Duniya Ke Rakhwale’, Mangeshkar’s ‘Aapki Nazron Ne Samjha’ and ‘Lag Ja Gale’; Talat’s ‘Tasveer Banata Hoon’ and ‘Itna Na Mujhse Tu Pyaar Badha’ and Jehan’s ‘Chaandni Raatein’ and ‘Aawaz De Kahan Hai’.
The Rathods will be accompanied by a group of 8 musicians especially flown over from India to bring to life these unforgettable musical masterpieces.
Roop Kumar Rathod himself has forged a formidable reputation as a playback singer in his own right, and will perform some of his most popular songs, including ‘Tere Liye’ (Veer Zara) and the award winning ‘Sandesein Aate Hai’ and ‘To Chaloon’ from ‘Border’, among other hits.
The concerts will mark a triumphant return for Roop Kumar who was so warmly feted during his last tour of the UK back in 2010: “The exhilarating response that we got on our UK tour in 2010 has encouraged us to come back to be with our favorite audience one more time. We are thrilled that Saregama Events are doing this. We are completing 100 years of Indian cinema next year, but if we try to count the names and pay homage to all those responsible it will take another 100 years. So in our own innovative style, we will sing not only our own popular numbers but also gems from the Golden era of cinema.”
The concerts are yet another coup for Saregama, capturing an adoring public’s imagination with its’ meticulously orchestrated roster of live events in 2012 which has included the hugely successful series of concerts featuring the inimitable Kailash Kher.
“Celebrating the Legends is our grandest project to date and we don’t mind being loud and proud about it!”, says Amarpal Singh Gaind, the Head of European Operations for Saregama.
“We will be honoring some of the sub-continent’s finest singers and their landmark songs. Roop and Sunali are classically trained musicians and yet commercially successful therefore are the most appropriate choice to pay tribute to these great artists, made especially poignant in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of Bollywood. Roop’s silken voice is perfect to do justice to greats like Rafi and Talat, but with a new spin to it, while Sunali’s versatile vocals will evoke memories of Lata and Noor at their peak.”
