British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan has long spoken about his ambition to fight the world’s best Floyd Mayweather – and now it appears he may get his wish but with the next best thing, or the same thing, depending on your viewpoint.
Khan could face Filipino great Manny Pacquiao next year in Las Vegas, according to reports.
The Sunday Telegraph quoted Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum as saying that the fight could take place as early as February.
“I’m in the process of having negotiations with Amir Khan’s uncle and his lawyer, Robert Davis, and those negotiations are ongoing”, Arum said.
Arum told the Telegraph that Khan was the only target at present for Pacquiao, who is almost recovered from a shoulder operation.
“I’m not saying necessarily that the negotiations will be successful, although I believe that everybody is negotiating in good faith. While those negotiations are ¬going on, I’m not going to discuss any other opponent for Manny Pacquiao”, Arum added.
Whilst Khan has long wanted a fight with Mayweather, a prime-time gig in Vegas against Pacquiao – who lost a boring 12-round bout with Mayweather earlier this year and claimed that he wasn’t 100 percent because of the shoulder injury – would be a major opportunity.
Fighting however, hasn’t been foremost in Khan’s mind recently.
He recently led an aid convoy to help Syrian refugees in Greece and has been active in a number of charitable projects in Pakistan.
