#Elementary: First trailer of Dibakar Banerjee's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi'

Yash Raj Films today released the first teaser trailer for director Dibakar Bannerjee’s eagerly-anticipated next release, ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshi’.

The film stars ‘Kai Po Che’ actor Sushant Singh Rajput as the Calcutta-based sleuth alongside ‘Go Goa Gone’ star Anand Tiwari and Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee.

Bakshi is the creation of legendary Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay who described the character more a “truth-seeker” as opposed a detective/private investigator.

Bandyopadhyay was heavily influenced by Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes although director Banerjee insists that his film adaptation will feature a detective who is the “Desi” answer to Holmes with desi solutions to uniquely desi problems.

“My film is an answer to Sherlock Holmes, and is not based on him”, Banerjee said.

“It is an original and is a desi answer to Sherlock Holmes in desi language.  Byomkesh Bakshi remains the first and the most famous detective in India, and this is the first time that he will be seen on the big screen.”

The film follows Bakshi, a recent college graduate, battling crime in Calcutta 1943: a time of tremendous upheaval in Bengal with the invading Japanese knocking on British India’s door by way of Burma, the bombing of Calcutta as well as the great Bengal famine that killed millions.

The film is slated for release February 2015.
