#FalseAlarm: BBC Urdu journalist apologizes after Queen health scare Tweet

A BBC Urdu Service journalist has apologized after causing a scare about the health of Queen Elizabeth.

Ahmen Khawaja tweeted: “BREAKING: Queen Elizabeth is being treated at King Edward 7th Hospital in London. Statement due shortly: @BBCWorld.”

In actual fact the Queen was visiting hospital for a routine check-up instead of being treated for an illness.

Ms Khawaja’s tweet was re-tweeted several times before it was deleted.

She also claimed that the tweet was the result of a “silly prank” and that her phone had been left “unattended” at home.

The BBC was carrying out a royal death rehearsal this morning, and its head of newsgathering, Jonathan Munro, had told staff to keep the fact of the rehearsal off social media.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said the Queen had attended her annual check-up at King Edward VII’s Hospital in London.

The BBC later apologised for the tweet.
