Islamic State has attracted lunatic jihadis from across the world but, it appears, that some are less loonier than others, depending on one’s perspective.
Experts have long believed that the murderous militant group give preferential treatment to western Jihadis and those from the wealthier Gulf Arab states – and not only because they bring both the ‘Gangsta’ and ‘Wealth’ elements.
It’s because those from the rest of the world are a bit rubbish. Not least those deluded souls from South Asia, according to intelligence reports.
The Press Trust of India quoted one western intelligence report given over to Indian agencies which states that fighters from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh as well as those from some African countries are considered “inferior” to Arab and western fighters.
For all of IS’ talk of a “paradise” in war-torn Syria and Iraq, the group’s self-declared Caliphate looks more like a construction site in any of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
The intelligence report claims that “fighters from South Asia are usually housed in groups in small barracks and are paid less than the Arab fighters and are provided inferior equipment”.
It adds that these “inferior” fighters are also often tricked into carrying out suicide missions – by being asked to drive a vehicle packed with explosives to a chosen target and make a mobile phone call which triggers the explosives, all unbeknownst to them.
The report also suggests that there is a disproportionately high casualty rate among South Asian and African fighters.
According to Indian officials two dozen Indian have thus travelled to Syria and Iraq to join Islamic State although the actual number is believed to be far higher. IS has also attracted numerous recruits from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and beyond.
