The good monarch keeps on giving.
Director Vikas Bahl’s lovingly-crafted ‘Queen’ and Vishal Bhardwaj’s hard-hitting ‘Haider’ swept the board at the 16th edition of the Indian International Film Academy Awards (IIFA) in Malaysia last night.
The queen of ‘Queen’ Kangana Ranaut was named Best Actress whilst Haider’s Shahid Kapoor won Best Actor.
In keeping with her decision to not attend any Bollywood award ceremonies, Ranaut didn’t make the trip to Kuala Lumpur but Kapoor – who has been widely feted for his turn as the eponymous hero in Bhardwaj’s Kashmir-set adaptation of ‘Hamlet’ – did turn up and thanked the film’s visionary director .
“I would like to thank Vishal Bhardwaj for this recognition. A very big thank you to him for believing in me. Today, I am standing here because of him. It was a scary film to do because we thought people will never love and understand this film,” Kapoor said.
Tabu’s powerful portrayal of Shahid’s mother in the film won her the best supporting actress award while Kay Kay Menon’s role of a shrewd politician in the same bagged him the trophy for the best actor in a negative role.
Queen also bagged the awards for best picture and story.
The big surprise of the night was Raj Kumar Hirani who won Best Director for his blockbuster satire ‘PK’ – the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time.
“This film fearlessly talked about religion in the country and I want to thank my father and mother for it. Like Subhash Ghai, I also feel a film is incomplete without the help of technicians and actors,” Hirani said.
Deepika Padukone missed out on the Best Actress category (for Happy New Year) but took home the curiously-named ‘Woman of the Year’ award.
Bollywood’s showman Subhash Ghai was honoured with the ‘Outstanding contribution to Indian cinema’ award.
