#IAmAnImmigrant: New campaign celebrating immigrant contribution to Britain goes live

New campaign celebrating immigrant contribution to Britain goes live. I Am An Immigrant

An innovative new campaign aimed at countering the increasingly virulent anti-immigrant rhetoric in Britain has gone live in London.

The ‘I Am An Immigrant’ poster campaign is organized by the Movement Against Xenophobia (MAX) and celebrates the contribution of immigrants to British society.

The posters feature immigrants from all walks of life – including a human rights lawyer, a brain surgeon, fire fighter, musician, cleaner and a Tube driver – and have begun appearing at Tube stations and other prominent locations.

A crowd-funding initiative for the campaign received an overwhelming response and MAX is now aiming to take its message around the UK and beyond.

A statement from the group said: “Let’s Go Global.  Let’s raise £100K.  We’ve been inspired by the thousands of people across the world supporting the campaign, migrants face problems all over the world.

“This campaign has really caught the public’s imagination, it has given immigrants a voice that allows them to tell their story.  A chance to be celebrated rather than always be vilified.  Although the posters will be up for three weeks it’s now even clearer to us that we need to sustain the momentum to allow all migrants from all communities the opportunity to participate.”

MAX has also reportedly received interest from various international organizations, including the International Organization for Migration, looking to take the poster campaign global.

The campaign is backed by more than one hundred British organizations, including the Green Party, the Indian Workers Association, the Black Minority Ethnic Community Organizations Network, the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights, the Desmond Tutu Foundation, Exiled Writers Ink, and the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants.
