Two animation films from India have been entered in the long-list for the ‘Best Animated Feature’ category at the 2013 Academy Awards.
Nikhil Advani’s ‘Delhi Safari’ and ‘Vikram Veturi’s ‘Hey s9kna’ will compete against 21 other films to enter the shortlist for the 85th edition of the Oscars, to be held February 24, 2013.
‘Delhi Safari’ was shot in 3D and features the voice talents of a number of Bollywood stars, including Akshay Khanna, Boman Irani and Suniel Shetty and tells the story of a group of animals who embark on a journey after the destruction of their habitat.
The film received solid reviews on its release and was even featured at a number of film festivals, including the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.
Veturi’s ”Hey s9kna’ is a more conventional animation but one which has been hailed by critics for its story of Lord s9kna, one of the legendary figures of Indian mythology.
Films that the Indian entries will vie against include Dr Seuss’ The Lorax, director Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’, ‘Hotel Transylvania’, ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’ and ‘The Pirates!’, the critically acclaimed stop-motion animated film from Aardman Animations, creators of Wallace and Gromit.
The shortlist will be announced January 10.
