The scale and ambition of Rakesh Roshan’s superhero sequel ‘Krrish 3’ has never been in doubt and the buzz is growing by the minute that the film’s box office performance will match that ambition.
Initial reviews of the film, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra and which opened with previews across the world on Thursday evening, have been positive and frequently glowing.
Critics have praised the film’s “ground-breaking” special effects whilst the performance of Hrithik Roshan – who plays three different characters – has been singled out for praise.
Above all, reviewers have been emphatic in their admiration of the film’s combination of compelling narrative and “Masalafied” superhero action.
The first two instalments of the franchise – ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ (2003) and ‘Krrish 2’ (2006) – have been blockbuster hits and the good reviews will only give added impetus to what is certain to be a monster Diwali at the box office.
In fact, trade analysts say that the film will have the biggest opening of the year thus far and exceed the 200-Crore takings of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chennai Express’, which released over Eid, the second-most important holiday weekend for film distributors in India after Diwali.
The film’s producer-director Rakesh Roshan – father of Hrithik – has mentioned that the film has been “very costly” so a solid opening weekend and a race up the all time charts will surely put the producers’ minds at rest.
It’s not just the cash tills at multiplexes that will be ringing.
The film’s producers have done special merchandise range and have plans to launch a cartoon series featuring the superhero who has been particularly popular with kids.
