Aamir Khan plays an alien stranded on earth in his latest controversial release ‘PK’ and now, it appears that the film could be heading to previously uncharted extra-terrestrial territory with its box office numbers.
The film has already broken box office records in India, becoming the highest grossing Bollywood film ever.
If it maintains its current head of steam it could become the first Indian movie to cross the magical $100 million mark.
Despite often violent protests and a string of lawsuits by Hindu activists angered by the film’s satirical look at Hindi Godmen, PK has grossed just under $90 million as of 4 January in global office takings – just over two weeks after its 19 December release.
That number means that the film has already eclipsed the previous Bollywood record holder ‘Dhoom 3’ – also starring Aamir Khan – which grossed a total of $86 million worldwide.
According to industry experts, the film will have at least another month-long run in most markets, meaning that it will be the first to cross the $100 million mark.
