India’s Hindu-nationalist Shiv Sena group on Monday has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that Muslims understand the necessity of family planning in what is seen as the latest attack on India’s largest minority community.
“The Prime Minister should clearly tell Muslims to obey the law of the land and accept the necessity of family planning.
“The PM promised to address their issues even if they knock his doors midnight. But, will Muslims similarly help to run the country?” said an editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’.
The Shiv Sena’s demand for family planning for Muslim families is the latest bizarre request by hardline Hindu groups.
Earlier this year a prominent member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was quoted as saying that Hindus should reproduce more in a bid to counter India’s fast-growing Muslim population.
Muslims are India’s largest ethnic minority group and their numbers are expected to rise by up to 10% in 2015.
The Shiv Sena’s demand is the latest in a string of moves seen by Muslims as discriminatory.
Last week the BJP-led government of Maharashtra decried Madrassas as “non-schools” that would not receive state funding.
In March this year the government passed a bill that banned the slaughter of cows – considered sacred by Hindus but which make up a key part of the diet of Muslims and low-caste Hindus.
