A 36-year-old man has been arrested over the hit-and-run incident in Leeds that left two children fighting for their lives.
Sabah Saleem, 10, and his 2-year-old brother Rayhaan were hit by a speeding car in the Hyde Park area of the city on Saturday as the siblings were returning home after visiting a nearby shop in time to celebrate Eid.
The arrested man is being questioned on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.
The BBC reports that Rayhaan’s condition is improving while sister Sabah remains in a critical condition at Leeds General Infirmary.
Some witnesses have said Sabah bore the brunt of the impact as she shielded her little brother.
On Monday the children’s aunt Saima Rafique told the BBC that the incident occurred as Rayhaan and Sabah returned from the shop with food for the family’s Eid celebrations.
“I really want my princess home,” she said.
“She had just completed her Holy Koran three days ago and was so happy.
“She had a cake ordered especially for her; we were going to celebrate on Eid day. She didn’t get to see her cake.”
