The mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular has been charged with his murder, five days after the youngster went missing from the family home in Edinburgh.
Rosdeep Kular, 33, made a brief appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday and was also charged with attempting to “defeat the ends of justice” after reporting her son missing on Thursday morning.
Mikaeel’s body was found at his aunt’s home in Fife, some 20 miles from Edinburgh.
Ms Kular, the beauty therapist whose parents are of Indian origin, made no plea and has been remanded in custody and will return to court on 28 January.
Mikaeel’s disappearance on Thursday morning sparked a massive manhunt in and around Edinburgh involving police and hundreds of volunteers.
His mother told police that she had put him to sleep on Wednesday night only to find he had disappeared when she went to wake him up the following morning.
According to reports Mikaeel – whose father is Pakistani – and his twin sister were born at the house where his remains were discovered. The twins and their three other siblings had lived at the adress until 18 months ago before moving to the apartment in Edinburgh.
The area outside the family apartment has been turned into a memorial for Mikaeel with hundreds of people leaving flowers, soft toys and lit candles.
On Saturday the Muirhouse St Andrew’s Church in Edinburgh was packed with people for a special service in Mikaeel’s memory.
