Opening Night of Nadia Manzoor’s ‘Burq Off!’

London’s Cockpit Theatre was the venue for the premiere of ‘Burq Off!’, a one-woman show about identity and sexuality written by and starring British Pakistani comedienne Nadia Manzoor.  The packed audience was witness to something quite special: the emergence of a new young British Asian talent with a remarkable breadth of skills.  The auto-biographical show examines Nadia’s struggles growing up in a conservative Pakistani Muslim family in modern Britain.  The hilarious and deeply personal one-and-a-half-hour show blends comedy, satire, drama, heartache and even a few dance numbers.  Following sold out performances in New York and San Francisco, the show’s arrival in London was a huge moment for Nadia who grew up in Hertfordshire.  The extended standing ovation at the end meant that ‘Burq Off!’ went down a storm with the audience which this week will include the likes of Gurinder Chadha, Kulwinder Ghir and Raageshwari Loomba among others.
