Quantico star Priyanka Chopra has slammed Indian media for publishing comments by her former manager who alleged that the actress attempted suicide in her early days in Bollywood.
The comments were made in a series of tweets by Prakash Jaju, once Chopra’s PA and manager and who had been jailed for “stalking” and “harrassing” the actress after the pair fell out more than a decade ago.
In the tweets, Jaju claimed that Chopra – a former Miss World – had tried to commit suicide after she couldn’t commit to a film with Bobby Deol owing to an injury. That film went on to become a huge box office hit.
Jaju also claimed that it was owing to his “influence” that Chopra had subsequently landed even “average” films and managed to get on her way to becoming one of the most successful actresses in Bollywood and beyond.
Chopra has recently taken Hollywood by storm as well playing an FBI agent in the hit series ‘Quantico’.
Chopra told the Press Trust of India: “First of all, it’s so sad that Indian media has given credibility to the man, who was in jail because of harassing me, without checking the history who the person is. So, I have nothing to say because there is no credibility to this person, who media is giving credibility to”.
Jaju’s comments followed the tragic suicide last week of Pratyusha Banerjee, a popular TV actress who is alleged to have taken her life due to a strained relationship with her boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh, also an actor.
Ms Banerjee’s death has re-opened a debate in India about how those in the spotlight are more prone to depression.
Chopra however, said that India had a far more pertinent debate to undertake and slammed the speculation surrounding Ms Banerjee’s death.
“Nobody knows the truth. Nobody ever tried to find out what the poor 24-year-old girl was going through. And as usual, people are dissecting her life. People are unnecessarily talking about her, not giving her and family the respect they deserve right now”, she said.
“Why don’t we talk about those women, who commit suicide because they were harassed by the mother-in-laws or being beaten in their homes? Or they kill themselves because they are unhappy in their homes? It’s so easy to turn around and say about the showbiz world.
“Young people are also committing suicide in colleges and hostels. I believe why they have to kill themselves for somebody else. I would kill that person first before ending my life for the person”, Chopra added.
