A Saudi Arabian university student who was murdered in a horrific knife attack in Essex may have been targeted because she was a Muslim, police officials say.
The woman is said to have been wearing a hijab and an abaya when she was stabbed to death along a public footpath in Colchester on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, the woman, who was in her early 30’s, was a student at the nearby University of Essex where she had arrived just a few months ago.
Detectives say that the victim was not robbed and that one of their main lines of investigation was that she was likely targeted because she was a Muslim.
Police have also called on residents in the area to check their gardens and garbage bins for a discarded weapon.
The University is home to a sizeable Saudi student community. The woman’s brother is also said to be studying there.
Students say they have had few problems with racism on or off campus before although one student described the area in which the victim was found as “dangerous”.
