‘2 States’, the film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s semi-autobiographical book of the same name, is set to become the biggest hit of 2014 after raking in a massive 40 Crores (£4 million) at cinemas across India.
The film, directed by Abhishek Varman and starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor, has also surpassed ‘Gunday’ as the biggest opener in the UK this year, surpassing ‘Gunday’ and had monster openings in the US and Canada.
Industry analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted: “#2States all set to cross $ 1 million mark in USA-Canada in opng wknd itself. BIGGEST OPENER of 2014 there. Overtakes #JaiHo by a margin!”
Bhagat too was suitably thrilled with the film’s success.
“Kudos @abhivarman and his entire team | 2 States Emerges Biggest Hit Of 2014. 2 States opening wknd ~Rs40cr, similar to 3 Idiots opening wknd! Only this time, with debut director, upcoming actors! Miracles do happen.”
‘3 Idiots’, adapted from Bhagat’s ‘Five Point Someone’, remains the biggest Bollywood blockbuster of all time.
‘2 States’, which tells the story of Punjabi Bhagat’s romance and marriage to his Tamilian wife Anusha Surya Narayanan, received mixed reviews from critics, but distributor Disney UTV made sure that prints saturated cinemas in India and worldwide.
According to reports, the movie was released at more than 2400 screens worldwide, including 400 in more than 30 countries.
