#Shivaji: Celebrate Marathi culture with Maharashtra Mandal London

The Indian warrior king Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has long been an integral part of the identity of the Marathi community from India with the 17th Century ruler’s wisdom, courage, progressive attitudes and tolerance becoming benchmarks for the people of Maharashtra.

Now Maharashtra Mandal London (MML), the world’s largest community organization for overseas Maharashtrians, is paying its own unique tribute with the second annual ‘Abhinay Pan UK One-Act Drama Contest’.

The contest features talented Marathi theatre groups from across the United Kingdom performing short, one-act plays.

Whilst participants are encouraged to base the play on an aspect of Marathi culture – ideally the legacy of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – any topic is welcome.

It makes for quite a spectacle, particularly if you’re an audience member – digesting an apparently never-ending stream of stories unfold on the stage one after the other.

If one is at a loss for an original storyline, the MML has a surfeit of scripts and plays that is available to those planning to take part.

This year’s event takes place at the MML auditorium in Dollis Hill, north London on 23 and 24 May.
