Supreme Court rejects final plea by Sanjay Dutt; actor to be jailed May 16

The Supreme Court of India has rejected a petition by Sanjay Dutt requesting a review of the court’s decision to send the actor back to jail.

The Munna Bhai star was ordered by the court in March to serve the remaining three years of his five year jail term for acquiring several firearms from the main accused in the 1993 Mumbai bombings.

Judges said there was “no merit” in the actor’s appeal, meaning he will go to jail on 16 May.
Dutt, 53,  has already served 18 months of the sentence.

The actor, the son of a Hindu father and Muslim mother, has insisted that the firearms he obtained were necessary to defend his family during the Hindu-Muslim riots of 1993 sparked by the destruction of the Babri mosque by Hindu extremists.

The Supreme Court’s decision to return Dutt to jail was met with widespread shock in Bollywood with many of the actor’s colleagues calling the decision unfair.

In April, the court had allowed Dutt an additional four weeks to surrender after the actor requested time to complete several film projects.

In 2006, a special anti-terror court convicted 100 people for the Mumbai bombings which left more than 250 people dead.

Twelve were given the death penalty and 20 others sentenced to life imprisonment.

Dutt was the most high-profile of the convicts and was charged with firearms offences and criminal conspiracy.

The conspiracy charge was later dropped.
