#BritishAsianTrust: Ambani Foundation to match Charles’ new anti-trafficking fund

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, pose with Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji (2nd from Left) and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi (Far Left).

The Prince of Wales last night launched a new anti-trafficking fund for India, aimed at supporting the work done by the charity British Asian Trust (BAT).

The heir to the throne unveiled the fund at the Trusts' annual gala held at Banqueting House in Whitehall.

BAT, launched in 2007 at the behest of Prince Charles, has recently expanded its remit to include funding projects specifically aimed at battling the scourge of trafficking on the sub-continent.

India is home to 14 million trafficked slaves, nearly half the world's total.  Trafficking remains the world's fastest growing international crimes.

The new fund announced by Charles will help support BAT's grassroots initiatives aimed at tackling slavery and trafficking as well as supporting survivors through rehabilitation and re-intergration.

Key supporters of the fund include biotech entrepreneur Shalni Arora and her Savannah Wisdom foundation and the Hummingbird Trust.

The Prince also revealed that India's Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, will match the funds raised for the new initiative.

Appropriately enough, the key note speech at last night's gala was delivered by none other than Kailash Satyarthi, the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner and arguably the world's most well-known anti-trafficking and anti-slavery campaigner.

More than a million pounds were raised at last night's event which was also attended by the likes of Simon Cowell, footballer Cesc Fabregas, Bollywood starlet Rani Mukerji and, for the first time, the Duchess of Cornwall, who Prince Charles tenderly referred to as his "Mehbooba".
