Ensemble films are dime a dozen in Bollywood but good ones are a bit rarer.
This summer sees the release of a film featuring one of the finest collections of Bollywood talent in recent memory.
‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ is packed to the poop deck – literally – with exciting talent from across several Bollywood eras: from Anil Kapoor, rocking a salt and pepper look, to Farhan Akhtar, Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Rahul Bose and Zarina Wahab.
The behind the scenes talent is as impressive as those in front: the film is directed by the quietly talented Zoya Akhtar who has written the film alongside brother Farhan and the brilliant Reema Kagti, the woman responsible for the unforgettable ‘Talaash’.
The Akhtars - along with Kagti, Zoya's rumoured lover - are known for their films 'celebrating' the dysfunctionality inherent in all manner of relationships: from 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' to 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd'.
‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ appears created from the same mould and follows the travails of a dysfunctional Punjab family – the Mehras.
At the helm of the family is Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor, rocking a fantastic salt-and-pepper look) and his wife Neelam (Shah). The couple are the toast of Delhi society – rich, well-connected, blessed with all the trappings of society’s most fortuitous, not to mention a 30-year marriage.
To celebrate, the couple decide to take a cruise through Europe with close family and friends. As happens with most things picture-perfect, their lives begin to unravel as financial travails, fading romances, new love and a myriad other conflicts rise to the boil – all inside the suffocating confines of a cruise ship.
