#Empower: ‘We must encourage youth to take up leadership roles’ – Kailash Satyarthi

Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi has called for the Commonwealth of Nations to "harness the potential of youth" to over the challenges the world faces.

Speaking ahead of the Commonwealth Day Observance at Westminster Abbey on Monday, Mr Satyarthi said that it was important to encourage youth across the commonwealth to be the leaders of tomorrow.

"We have to encourage leadership roles for them in three key areas - education, environmental issues and social justice.  The only way we can tackle the challenges we face is by empowering our youth", the children's rights activist said.

Mr Satyarthi was joined by members of the Royal family at the event, including the Queen, Prince Charles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as commonwealth leaders including Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena at the Abbey.

The event was followed by the annual commonwealth High Commissioner's Banquet at St James' Palace on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Lord Howell, President of the Royal Commonwealth Society, said: “In a dangerous age, in which the established world order is fast unravelling, the Commonwealth family becomes an ever more valuable network of like-minded nations and peoples, working together, talking together and sharing values together to underpin stability and development.”

The Royal Commonwealth Society organises the High Commissioners’ Banquet as part of Commonwealth Week celebrations taking place between 9th and 13th March.

Commonwealth Week is an opportunity to celebrate the enduring relationships between Commonwealth countries, promote international cooperation and formulate policies to better handle global issues.
