A Paris-bound Air India flight was delayed for three hours at Chennai airport on Saturday after a fight broke out inside the cockpit between the pilot and an engineer.
According to reports, flight AI 143 with 122 passengers on-board had been scheduled to depart Chennai at 9.45 am but developed technical problems.
A scuffle is then said to have broken out between the Captain Manik Lal and ground engineer V T Kannan after the duo began a heated argument about whether the aircraft was cleared for flying.
The Times of India reports that the pilot wanted to take-off but the engineer was not prepared to clear the aircraft to fly.
Air India have confirmed that the pilot allegedly assaulted the engineer as he prepared to take off.
An Air India official told The Times of India: “He (Lal) was not pleased to see too many people inside the cockpit and started to send them out.
“The flight engineer V T Kannan reached the cockpit and informed the pilot that the plane was yet to be handed over to the crew for flying. But the pilot refused to pay heed to the explanation”.
The flight departed after another pilot replaced the one involved in the incident, the official added.
The engineer reportedly suffered a minor chin injury in the altercation.
