The legendary Bollywood actress Sridevi has died after suffering a massive heart attack.
The mother-of-two was visiting Dubai for a wedding with her husband – the producer Boney Kapoor – and one of her daughters when she passed away aged just 54.
Her brother-in-law, the actor Sanjay Kapoor confirmed the news of her passing on Saturday night.
Sridevi’s husband is part of the renowned Kapoor family of Bollywood.
Family connections however, were few and far between when Tamil Nadu-born Sridevi rose to fame in the 1980’s and 90’s, first as a child actor in south Indian cinema and then as one of the most striking and well known actors in Bollywood.
Her natural beauty, drive and talent led her to become the first female “Superstar” of Bollywood, starring in a string of mega blockbusters such as ‘Himmatwala’, ‘Tohfa’, ‘Nagina’, ‘Mr India’ and numerous other hits.
In recent years she ventured into cross cultural cinema, appearing in the likes of ‘English Vinglish’.
Her death comes just days before the release of the debut film of her elder daughter Jhanvi Kapoor.
Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan to a lawyer father and a housewife, Sridevi was married twice – first to the actor Mithun Chakraborthy in the late 1980’s before marrying Boney Kapoor in 1996.
