A Southampton-based Indian couple have died and their nine-year-old daughter critically injured in a horror road accident in India.
Rupesh Nawarkhele, 38, and his 37-year-old wife Kavita Nawarkhele died after their minibus collided with a car near Chandigargh, Punjab in the early hours of Saturday. The couple were reportedly thrown out of the bus and crushed as it overturned.
The couple and their daughter Ananya were travelling to Delhi after visiting relatives in Dharamshala in northern India.
All three passengers traveling in the car were burned to death in the crash which also left 15 other people injured.
Reports say that Ananya is in a critical condition and has already undergone three separate operations at a hospital in nearby Mohali.
The driver of the bus has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by negligence.
Tonight it was revealed that Mr Nawarkhele worked in the child care department of Southampton Social Services while his wife had recently left her job as a nursery manager.
Family friend Vandana Deshpande said: “Rupesh and Kavita lived for their daughter. They were wonderful parents. This is such an awful tragedy.”
Ram Kalyan?,who runs a community radio station in Southampton, said :”Kavita was a volunteer for the radio project that I manage and she was very honest and reliable, worked well on her own as well and was a team player. I am devastated with this tragic news and to think we will never see her and her husband again.”
The couple had been due back in Southampton next weekend.
