The first trailer for Anurag Kashyap’s much-anticipated – and appropriately delayed – gangster saga ‘Bombay Velvet’ is finally out and it oozes drama.
The film is adapted from historian Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables which charts the rise of Bombay – or Mumbai – as the commercial and cultural hub of India.
It’s a story that is resplendent with plenty of intrigues, glamour and a whole host of characters trying to out-do each other.
The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as bare-knuckle fighter Johnny Balraj who is trying to make it big in the city; Anushka Sharma as a beautiful and mysterious jazz singer and, perhaps most intriguingly of all, Karan Johar playing a baddie for the first time – oily Parsi businessman Kaizad Khabbatta.
Kashyap reportedly filmed in Sri Lanka as he couldn’t find enough locations in Mumbai that evoked the city of the 1960’s.
Nevertheless, it all looks terrifically authentic.
