The wife of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal has been fined for taking her pet dog on a Jet flight from London.
Anita Goyal was handed the £410 fine by customs officials at Mumbai Airport on Saturday, according to reports.
Under customs regulations, passengers cannot carry pets inside the passenger cabin of aircraft unless it is accompanying a disabled person or being flown to India with passengers who intend residing in the country.
Reports say that Mrs Goyal also failed to produce the necessary paperwork for an accompanying pet as required by Jet’s own terms and conditions.
A Jet Airways spokesperson however, told the Times of India that Mrs Goyal had met the airlines’ requirements.
“The dog was in the cargo (area) and not in the cabin. It was in a pet basket required for the transfer. She had all the necessary certification and documents. She paid all charges required in compliance,” said the spokesperson.
Mrs Goyal, who divides her time between the UK and India along with her family, is an Executive Vice President in the airline founded by her husband in 1992.
