Facebook has reported a major jump in the number of people logging into the social networking site on a daily basis, with users in India, Indonesia, Brazil and other emerging markets particularly active on the site.
In a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company said the number of people logging into the site on a daily basis (Daily Active Users or DAU’s) in June rose nearly 30% from an year earlier to a staggering 699 million.
The filing added that the number of Monthly Active Users – the total number of active Facebook users – rose by a fifth to 1.15 billion from 955 million from a year earlier.
With a total of some 78 million “Facebookers”, India lags far behind North America and Europe in the number of active Facebook users.
However, the sub-continent represents one of the fastest growing markets for the company with the number of new users rising by 50% year-on-year particularly as the use of smart phones and tablets becomes more popular.
“In all regions, an increasing number of our MAUs are accessing Facebook through mobile devices, with users in India, Brazil, and Indonesia representing key sources of mobile growth over the second quarter of 2013 as compared to the first quarter of 2013,” the company said.
